Kabwasa: "Is You Is"
August 2, 2019
LA-based artist, Kabwasa, has released a new single titled “Is You Is.” The song kicks off with a classic jazz-inspired piano, lightly layered over with a hint of Kabwasa’s vocals, before an epic duo of heavy bass and trumpets transforms the song into an upbeat and funky rhythm that instantly has you tapping your foot and snapping your fingers, or in my case, straight out dancing down the street. Kabwasa’s voice already constitutes unique, but in “Is You Is” there is an added quality of raspiness that further contributes to the jazzy flare. Lucky to call this talented soul a friend, Etienne Green is originally from Watsonville, California, and is currently attending USC as an Anthropology major.
In describing the inspiration behind his music, Green says, “Music is most powerful when it holds something behind it. Whether it’s telling your own story, someone else’s, or just spilling out some emotion.” It’s clear when listening to “Is You Is,” which Green says was inspired by the classic jazz song, “Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby,” that he means what he says. The song’s grooviness that makes your feet start to move doesn’t take away from the meaning of relationship struggles that lie underneath the surface of Kabwasa’s lyrics.
